Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
should I use and the method and glues please. I also want to replace a sagging piece on the roof. The caravan is the 1955 Handmade one with photos in the forum " Introduction area" Any help would be greatfully received.
Re: Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
Hi Robert.
Do you have any photos of the sections you want to replace, as that would make it a lot easier to identify what needs to be done.
As for glues I use water proof "Aquadere" as it is easy to use and bonds well. You could also use a boat building glue, but these need to be measured by weight and mixed.
While we are talking glues, Iam not sure if you have it it NZ but stay away from "Liquid Nails" when gluing the frame, as this type of glue is a contact glue and once set leaves the glued joint slightly flexible, which later on will result in joint movement and paint cracking .
Cheers.
Richard.

Hi Robert.
If you click on the General Discussion section, at the top of the page is a topic on How to post photos. The best method to use is the last one that is listed there, or if you email me the photos to thetrodler@yahoo.com.au I can post them for you.
Cheers.

Re: Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
Thank You for your help Richard.
I have sent the photo to you showing the side of the caravan. We have both glues you mention so will use the Aquadere.
Now all I need is to know what thickness of material to use.
Thanks Again
Regards
Robert

Re: Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
Here is the photo that Robert emailed to me of the side of the van he is working on.
Robert it looks as though the outside lining is masonite, if it is you will need to reline the van with a product called Tempered Masonite, this will last in the weather where standard masonite will fall apart very quickly. Check with your local plywood supplier as I can only get 6 mm Tempered Masonite here.
If you want to steer clear of masonite a 3 or 4 mm ply with water resistant glue or marine ply will do the job.
Cheers.

Re: Replacing old Hardwood exterior panels, what thickness ply
Well the reclading of one side is almost complete ready for the trim and painting. I used 4mm lightweight caboon with a 2 pot expozy and it looks great. The fram seems to be in very good condition which is very pleasing. Will post some more photos.
