It has always been hotly contested by the RACV Caravan Club of Victoria, and the Caravan Club of South Australia who actually held the first rally. Here is a 1937 article on the on the RACV Caravan Club.
I know I will upset my friends from South Asutralia but from memory I think the RACV club beat the South Australian club by a month or two.
