EXPANSION OF CARAVAN CONSTRUCTION
ONE of the most striking aspects of the development of the caravan industry in Victoria has been the expansion of the Caravan Construction and Hire Co., Ltd.. of Pt. Nepean Road. Gardenvale.
In May, 1936 the company was a tiny organisation, operating in quarters in Bay Street. Brighton, with six employees and tangible assets of £1000. Today, it has a staff of 70, and tangible assets of nearly £30.000. The company owes its origin to the enterprise of Mr F. C. Heber, now production manager, who designed and manufactured the first caravan. In January, 1937, the company purchased the site of the Brighton markets, and established its new factory. Today, it has more than 230 caravans on the roads, including 60 in its own hire fleet. A new distribution policy has been in operation since last January, and since then 40 dealer points have been established in the country districts of Victoria, Caravans are already available for sale or hire at most of these points, and the others will be similarly equipped before long. Interstate Agencies. An agency, with a hiring fleet, has been established in New South Wales, and another in Western Australia, to which a large number of caravans will be shipped in the near future. The company has played a leading part in development of commercial and display caravans, and trained staff to advise manufacturers or distributors on the best way in which these may be employed The Board was reconstituted recently, and now comprises Messrs. John F. Hughes, E. U. Perrier, A. J. Scovell, and V. L. Stokoe, with Mr Murray Angus as managing director. Mr F. S. Curiiow is secretary of the company. Following the reconstitution of the Board, Mr Fred Campbell was appointed advisory factory manager to facilitate introduction of new methods of production. Mr Campbell has had wide experience of repetition and mass production methods.
