Hi All,
I'm looking at buying my first van and am wondering what to do about insurance. I'd be spending under $10k on the van but wondered whether or not it's worth insuring and if it needs to be insured for third party? Also if there is a particular company that specialises in vintage van insurance? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Colin
Caravan Insurance anyone??
Re: Caravan Insurance anyone??
Hi Colin.
And welcome to the ourtouringpast.com forum.
I dont know of an insurance company that specialises in historic caravans, but I have about 8 of my vans insured with the NRMA, and have done so for the last 16 or so years and they have been very helpful.
Just one thing though, there are a couple of insurance companies that specialise in insuring vintage cars, that say that they will insure vintage caravans. But some of them only cover you if the van is used for display only and not holiday use, so just be careful of the fine print and how you intend to use your caravan.
As with all insurance policies, unless you read the fine print, you dont know what you are actually covered for untill you try and make a claim, and by then its too late.
Cheers.
Richard.

Re: Caravan Insurance anyone??
Thanks Richard,
Much appreciated! I'm based in Melbourne though so not sure NRMA service the area, but I'll look into it. Thanks for the welcome too, I'm really impressed with the site and how friendly and helpful everyone seems to be. Have fallen in love with the Propert too I love the ingenuity of them and, fingers crossed, may be towing one around soon myself ... I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again,
Cheers,
Colin

Hi Colin.
Good luck with the purchase of the Propert.
If you are after some advice with your first Historic Caravan you may want to have a look at an article in the this months Vintage Caravan magazine on what to look for when purchasing a historic caravan, written by yours truely.
Cheers.

Re: Caravan Insurance anyone??
Gday Richard,
Thanks for that, I'd already read the article and it was a great read and very helpful. The other article in that on your Propert was the real clincher for me for looking at getting one. They're such a great concept and the engineering side of it is brilliant!!
Also on the purchase front, I have 'purchased' Propert 8-316 from George just this evening. Still have to finalise the details but we shook hands over the phone and he's promised it's mine so am looking forward to diving into the Vintage van side of camping now.
Will be looking to get an annexe made up too and have already checked out all the info - and you've found so much of it! - on this site and The Vintage Caravan one too on the Properts. It's been great finding this site, I love it.
I also have mates in Clifton near you there, so hope to come past and check out the museum at some stage and compare Properts, yours is beautiful!
Thanks Richard for all the help and keep up the good work with this site and the magazine too, I'm really enjoying the community that you guys are developing... Love your work Mate!!
Cheers,
Colin
